Porsche 550 Spyder Replica (1955 | Reg 2002)

The Porsche 550 Spyder is one of the most iconic shapes in motorsport history. Often linked to the James Dean story, but born for one thing, racing. In period it earned the “giant killer” reputation by punching well above its weight, thanks to its tiny size, slippery body, and nimble handling that made bigger machinery work hard to keep up.

This replica has been built in the same spirit as the original cars (only around 90 were produced between 1953 and 1956) and captures that low-slung, no-frills Spyder vibe beautifully. It features a spaceframe chassis and an imported body from California and built by Eddie Paladin, giving it the right look and stance from every angle.

The big upgrade comes in the form of a mid-mounted 2.2-litre air-cooled flat-six, paired with a 4-speed manual with Porsche internals, delivering the balance, response, and soundtrack you want from a proper lightweight driver’s car. It’s not just for show either, this very car has won the Knysna Hill Climb twice in its class, proof that it’s been built to do more than pose.

Replicas like this are the closest most of us will ever get to owning a true piece of 1950s Porsche racing history and this one promises exactly that, pure mechanical feel, huge theatre, and miles of smiles from the moment the hammer falls.
