Description

The Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 occupies a special place in the marque’s history, combining the luxury and refinement of the W116 S-Class with the performance of one of Mercedes-Benz’s most formidable V8 engines.

Based on the long-wheelbase 450 SEL, the 6.9 was powered by the legendary M100 V8, enlarged to 6.9 litres and paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Derived from the engine used in the prestigious Mercedes-Benz 600, the M100 gave the 450 SEL 6.9 effortless performance and exceptional high-speed ability for a luxury saloon of its era.

Engineering was central to the 6.9’s appeal. The M100 utilised a dry-sump lubrication system, allowing the engine to sit lower in the chassis while maintaining the W116’s elegant bonnet line. It was complemented by self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension, providing the unusual combination of excellent ride comfort, body control and stability.

Introduced as the spiritual successor to the celebrated 300 SEL 6.3, the 450 SEL 6.9 was distinguished discreetly by its “6.9” boot badge. Despite its understated appearance, it ranked among the fastest and most technically sophisticated four-door cars of its generation.

Production was limited, with approximately 7,380 examples built, making the 450 SEL 6.9 one of the most desirable variants of the W116 S-Class today.

Finished in Champagne with a Tan interior, this 1978 example displays an indicated 246,018 km and represents a fascinating opportunity to acquire Mercedes-Benz’s flagship performance saloon from an era when engineering excellence took precedence over excess.
