South Africans were lucky enough to see the E28 M5 on our roads. Due to the fact that the Rosslyn plant is the only manufacturing facility outside of BMW Germany to have assembled the M5, we can claim it as a “Local Legend”. Yes, that’s right: BMW SA assembled 153 right-hand drive E28 M5s for our consumption. CKD kits came in from Germany so the mechanical performance is on a par with that of the Euro-spec machines. Externally they differ though, with M-Technic body parts that were optional overseas but fitted as “Standard here in SA”.

Fitted with tasty BMW BBS 7.5×16” cross-spoke alloy rims. The local paint shop only offered Henna Red, Ice White, Aero Silver, Dolphin Grey metallic and Diamond Black metallic and the interior was kitted out with every option (except the electric sunroof) as standard. Oh yes, and the Nappa leather (including dashboard) only ever came on South African M5’s.

Thanks to the 210kw M88 engine (as per BMW M1) the 0 to 100km/h test was completed in only 6.75 seconds and max speed was capped at 250km/h.
