The Mercedes-Benz Ponton series, produced between 1953 and 1963, marked a major design milestone for the brand, it was the first fully integrated monocoque-body sedan from Stuttgart. The nickname “Ponton” (German for “pontoon”) comes from its rounded, unified fender lines that replaced the separate wing styling of earlier models.
This 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190 presents as a charming example of the era, finished in classic black paintwork paired with a contrasting red leatherette interior. The car has benefitted from a past restoration, including fresh paint and a re-trimmed cabin that captures its original 1950s character.
Under the bonnet lies Mercedes’ dependable 1.9-litre 4-cylinder engine paired with a 4-speed column-shift manual transmission. The car runs and drives sweetly, with that unmistakable solid feel of mid-century Mercedes engineering.
With accessible running costs and simple mechanicals, the 190 Ponton is the ideal entry point into classic Mercedes ownership, a car that’s both collectible and enjoyable to drive.
