The BMW R50/5 is a true classic of German engineering — a 500cc four-stroke, boxer twin-cylinder motorcycle featuring BMW’s signature shaft-drive system, known for its smooth power delivery and bulletproof reliability.
Produced between 1969 and 1972, the R50/5 was part of BMW’s legendary “/5 Series,” which marked a new era of modernity and refinement for the brand’s motorcycles. With fewer than 8,000 units built, these bikes have become increasingly collectible among enthusiasts.
Power comes from a robust 500cc engine producing 32 hp (23.6 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 39 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm, giving it a relaxed yet engaging ride that made it a favourite among long-distance riders of the era.
This particular example presents as a solid and original bike that runs when jump-started but will require a new battery. It would benefit from some light cosmetic refurbishment to restore its former shine or serve as an excellent base for a Café Racer project.
Whether restored to factory specification or transformed into a custom build, the BMW R50/5 remains a symbol of simplicity, reliability, and timeless Bavarian design — a true piece of motorcycling history.
