Built to Race. Born to Thrill.
1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0-Litre
“What wins on Sunday sells on Monday.”
That philosophy defined the fierce South African Group 1 racing era of the early 1980s, a time when BMWs, Fords, and Alfas battled wheel-to-wheel for glory. To qualify, manufacturers had to produce at least 200 road-going versions of their competition cars, giving rise to some of the most exciting homologation specials ever built.
Among them, none captured the spirit of the series quite like the Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0, a car born from passion, competition, and unmistakable Italian flair.
Derived from the standard 2.5-litre GTV6, the South African-built 3.0-litre version was fitted with triple Weber carburettors, uprated suspension, and Compomotive split-rim wheels in place of the factory alloys. The result was sharper, louder, and infinitely more engaging. Only around 242 examples were ever produced — with many sources suggesting the true number was even fewer — making this one of South Africa’s most desirable performance icons.
The design, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, remains timeless, sleek, aerodynamic, and perfectly proportioned. With the torquey 3.0-litre V6 up front and a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, the GTV6 3.0 achieved near-perfect weight distribution, delivering balance and precision at any speed.
Alfisti the world over still revere its legendary “Busso” V6 a mechanical symphony so sweet that even Enzo Ferrari himself once called it “one of the best engines ever built.”
This particular example carries a touch of South African racing heritage, once owned and signed by local motorsport legend Arnold Chatz. It remains a well-preserved, beautifully balanced driver’s car that sounds as good as it looks.
For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this GTV6 3.0 isn’t just a car, it’s an expression of Italian soul and South African ingenuity, a rare piece of motoring history destined to keep appreciating both in value and legend.
