Introduced in May 1972, the 3.0 CSL was a homologation special build to make the car eligible for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. 1265 were built.
The ‘L’ in the designation meant Leicht (light), referring to the reduced weight of the car. The diet program included thinner steel to build the body unit, deleting the trim and soundproofing, using aluminium alloy doors, bonnet, and boot lid, and using Perspex side windows. Just 500 right hand drive versions were made for export to the United Kingdom. These differed slightly at the request of the UK importer in that the soundproofing was kept while electric glass windows and stock E9 bumpers were fitted.
Initially the CSL used the same silky straight 6-cylinder engine as the carburettor-fitted 3.0 CS, but from August 1972 the displacement was increased to 3003cc to take part in the over 3-litre racing class.
Finished in its factory Golf Yellow, this example sports the iconic CSL black side stripes and Alpina 14-inch alloy wheels. The interior continues the sporting theme with genuine Scheel ‘bucket’ seats and a Mountney 3-spoke steering wheel. Woodgrain dash and door card inserts add some extra class, driving home the balance between luxuriousness and performance focus we’ve become accustomed to seeing from BMW.
With only 500 RHD CSLs produced worldwide this is an exceedingly rare and desirable piece of BMW history. A true collector’s dream, blending exclusivity, heritage, and driving purity in one legendary package.
