Description

BMW E30 333i

With BMW Germany not producing the 4-cylinder E30 M3 in right-hand drive, BMW South Africa needed its own weapon to keep the brand competitive in local motorsport. The answer arrived in 1985 with the E30 333i, a uniquely South African homologation special developed for the production car-based Group 1 racing series.

Although Group 1 was cancelled in 1985 before the 333i could properly prove itself on track, BMW SA continued production until 1987. Just 204 units were built, or 205 including the pre-production car, making the 333i one of the rarest and most desirable E30 derivatives ever produced.

This particular example is Car Number 34, adding another layer of provenance to an already significant car. It is also the first air-conditioning-optioned 333i we have offered for sale, making it a standout example for Creative Rides.

Under the bonnet sits the legendary 3.2L M30B32 straight-six, sourced from the E23 733i and paired with a short-ratio 5-speed dogleg Getrag gearbox and ZF limited-slip differential. Due to the tight fit of the big six-cylinder engine in the E30 bay, buyers had to choose between air conditioning or power steering. This example was ordered with air conditioning and no power steering, keeping that old-school, analogue driving feel firmly intact.

Finished in Henna Red with a beige leather interior and riding on 16-inch Alpina wheels, this 333i remains largely original, with some cosmetic work carried out over the years.

Rare, numbered and proudly South African, this BMW 333i is more than just an E30. It is a genuine homologation legend and an important piece of BMW SA performance history.
