BMW M5 (E34) – South African-Assembled Super Saloon Rarity

Produced from September 1988 to August 1995, the E34-generation M5 is widely regarded as one of the great analogue performance sedans — a true “super saloon” from the era when M-cars were still built with a largely hand-finished approach. Power comes from BMW’s legendary S38 straight-six, an evolved version of the previous generation’s M5 engine, delivering that distinctive high-rev character and mechanical edge enthusiasts chase today.

What makes this example especially significant is its South African provenance. The South African M5 was assembled at BMW’s Rosslyn plant using complete knock-down (CKD) kits supplied from Garching, Germany, and production numbers are believed to be around ±274 cars — making it a genuinely scarce local-market M5.

This vehicle has had some paintwork in the past and will require minor additional work, but it represents a strong opportunity: a rare, historically important performance sedan with serious credentials and real collectability. If you want an M5 from the golden era — the kind that built the legend — this is the one.
