Description

Mazda RX-7 FC Convertible

This rare example of the second-generation RX-7 (FC) carries fascinating provenance, believed to have been originally imported for the Managing Director of Samcor’s wife at the time. Samcor, which represented both Ford and Mazda in South Africa, never officially imported these convertibles, making this an exceptionally scarce sight on local roads today.

Powered by Mazda’s legendary 13B turbocharged rotary engine, paired here with an automatic transmission, this car presents a particularly unusual configuration for the model, enhancing its uniqueness among enthusiasts.

The RX-7 Convertible was a technological showcase in its day. It featured a removable rigid front section over the passengers, combined with a power-operated folding vinyl rear roof with a heated glass window. Mazda pioneered the use of the first integral wind deflector, a rigid panel that folded up behind the seats to reduce turbulence with the top down. Other highlights included headrest-mounted audio speakers and a folding leather tonneau cover — thoughtful touches that underscored Mazda’s innovative approach.

With its limited history in South Africa and the fact that it was never officially offered here, this RX-7 Convertible stands as both a collector’s curiosity and a piece of local motoring history. Few, if any, comparable examples exist in the country today, making it a rare opportunity for rotary enthusiasts and collectors alike.
