Porsche 914 – Powered by a 13B Rotary

Every now and then, a car arrives at Creative Rides that makes you stop, stare, scratch your head a little, and then grin like a schoolboy. This Porsche 914 is exactly that.

We have seen Porsche Outlaws, 356-inspired builds, 550 Spyder replicas, and plenty of 911s, but this is our first Porsche 914 and it is no ordinary 914. Sitting behind the cabin is not the expected flat-four or flat-six, but a Mazda 13B rotary engine, giving this mid-engined Targa something completely different in character, sound, and attitude.

On paper, it sounds like a mad idea. In person, it starts making sense very quickly. Fire it up and the rotary burble immediately gets under your skin. Select first on the dogleg gearbox, ease off the clutch, let the revs build, and the soundtrack changes from a low mechanical growl into that unmistakable rotary scream. It is raw, unusual, and properly addictive.

This is not a car built to blend in. It is a driver’s toy with a serious sense of humour. The wide stance, Fuchs-style wheels, open Targa roof, and bright red paintwork give it real road presence, while the simple black interior keeps the focus exactly where it should be — on the drive.

The 914 shape has always been a little different. Mid-engined, compact, low-slung, and proudly unconventional. Some love it immediately, some need a second look, but with the roof panel removed and the car opened up, it takes on a completely different personality. Part Porsche, part roadster, part weekend weapon.

This is a car that needs to be seen, heard, and driven to be understood. It is strange, special, and full of character, exactly the kind of machine that makes an auction room lean forward.
