Description

Classic Air-Cooled Heritage

This beautifully restored 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi captures everything we love about the air-cooled era, simplicity, style, and that unmistakable VW soul. Known affectionately as the Bay Window “Lowlight”, this was the second generation of VW’s legendary Kombi, built locally at Uitenhage from 1968 to 1975 before the facelifted “highlight” models arrived.

No expense was spared in the restoration. The 1600cc twin-port engine was completely rebuilt by a renowned VW specialist and fitted with new cylinder heads, while the brake system was renewed using imported European components. Every detail has been handled with care, from the new headlining and door cards to the correct period antenna, Supersonic radio (unconnected), and charming cane parcel shelves under the dash.

The bodywork is finished in a lovely period two-tone green and white, complemented by polished stainless-steel waistline trim and eyelids over the headlights for that classic 1970s flair. Inside, the Kombi has been reupholstered in tan vinyl and configured in its original 8-seater layout, complete with the fold-out step on the sliding door for easy access.

With its 1600 twin-port engine and single downdraft carburettor, the Kombi remains a willing cruiser, perfect for Sunday drives, family outings, or simply turning heads at any car gathering.

A South African-built icon, meticulously restored to its original spirit, ready to enjoy or proudly display in any collection.
